One Saturday, during my preteen years, I decided to bake some oatmeal cookies. It was my second time doing it.
The first time I baked oatmeal cookies, they turned out great. This time, the recipe I used was different. Unlike the last recipe, this recipe called for shortening. I didn’t know what shortening was, so I skipped it and used the other ingredients for the cookies.
The dough tasted fine. But the cookies themselves tasted different.
When I tasted the first cookie, I thought it tasted terrible! It was because I had skipped the shortening. On the other hand, Dad thought it tasted good and it reminded him of Honey Oats cereal.
Despite my disappointment, I was surprised to discover that I had made homemade cereal!
Dad showed me what the container of shortening looked like. The next time I made something that required shortening, I would know what to get.
Sometimes when one does something, expecting a certain result, something else happens instead. That unexpected result could lead to something amazing!
