One Thanksgiving morning, during my teenage years, I volunteered to make a big three-layer orange-buttered frosted cake as a dessert to complete the feast.
At first, things went smoothly like an express train that was ahead of schedule. However, my train soon derailed when I discovered that the cake layers were flat after taking them out of the oven.
I soon realized that I had forgotten to add the baking powder. My folks also realized it and they let me have it. I had to start the whole thing over again.
I was growling like an angry Shih Tzu as I mixed in the ingredients. My train was back on track.
The three cake layers turned out great. I took them out of the oven to let them cool before frosting.
Although my folks were pleased this time, they still had a little scolding heat left to give me for my earlier mishap.
Even the little problems can be as disastrous as steering rods breaking off the wheels of steam locomotives.
