One birthday when I was just a kid, a big, rectangular birthday cake at a supermarket that was long and wide as a miniature football field got my attention. In fact, the top of the cake was done as a football field!
Along with its green icing on the top, with the white representing the yard lines, there was also golden frosting along the edges—both top and bottom, and all the sides of the cake were white. There were also six ice cream cones with yellow frosting representing the ice cream; they looked more like Olympic torches! Anyway, four of the cones each occupied a corner while the other two cones each occupied the middle part of the length sides of the cake.
That cake was so irresistible and, after I did a lot of nagging like a chittering squirrel, Dad decided to get it for me.
When the big day came, I was really excited to finally taste that cake. However, once I took that first bite, the taste didn’t turn out the way I expected. In fact, after a couple of days more, it begin to taste more like baby food! I decided I had eaten my share of the cake, and just in time, for the cake itself soon started to turn the same color as the remaining part of the frosted football field—green!
Although my interest in baking was triggered by my success in making chocolate chip cookies two years before, this incident with the birthday cake was what really cemented my love for homemade baking.
